When we first considered rescuing excess banquet food, we turned to the Houston Food Bank for advice. They put us in touch with one of their many partner agencies, Impact Houston, which serves 700 meals a week to needy individuals and families. We succesfully conducted an 18-month pilot program, arranging rescues from major hotels and banquet venues in conjunction with Impact Houston.
Chefs and caterers welcomed the opportunity to help their community by donating their unserved surplus prepared food. Impact Houston appreciated receiving the delicious chef-prepared food, which their clients enjoyed at their meal site near downtown Houston.
Knowing that our program model works, we set about gradually expanding to more food donors and recipients. Our goal is to become a significant community resource in the fight against hunger and waste in Houston and other major cities throughout the United States.
